Casual Magic League

Our casual league is designed as a quarterly, persistent league designed for players who prefer a more laid-back style of play. Players will build decks when they join and continuously refine and/or rebuild them over the course of the quarter. Players can earn points via weekly, monthly, and quarterly achievements, then win prizes for meeting certain criteria such as point thresholds or ranking.

The $60 entry fee includes:

  • 10 booster packs
  • 1 storage box for your cards
  • 1 standard set of sleeves

Beginning in Week 6, additional packs may be purchased at a rate of one per week for use in the league.

League Play

Deck Construction

In Week 1, each player chooses 6 booster packs from the allowed sets (subject to availability). From those cards plus basic lands, each player constructs a minimum 40-card deck. Players can then play each other for points.

Each additional week, players may open 1 additional booster pack and the minimum deck size increases by 5 until it hits 60 cards, where it will remain for the rest of the season.

When not being played, decks and storage boxes are stored in the player’s home store and may not leave until the end-of-season invitational.

Trading cards is allowed (and encouraged) within the league, but NO OUTSIDE CARDS are allowed other than basic lands. All trades are final unless both players agree to trade back.

Each league is played for the duration of a quarter in parallel between all participating stores. At the end of each quarter, participating stores come together for a league championship. The league is active every quarter except Q4.

Key Rules

  • The player with fewer league points determines who plays first and who draws. In the case of a tie, determine first player randomly.
  • Each player gets 1 free mulligan (reshuffle and redraw) each match for any reason.
  • If a player draws 0,1,6, or 7 lands in their opening hand, they may take a mulligan. This does not count as their free mulligan.
  • No more than ⅓ of your packs may be play boosters.
  • Players are responsible for reporting their matches and achievements to staff.

This is a living format and will evolve over time. We will do our best to limit major changes to between seasons.
